“I love everything Prabal does—every woman wants a piece in their closet,” Joan Smalls told Style.com last night at Indochine, where the designer Prabal Gurung and his friends Diane von Furstenberg, Jenna Lyons, and Liu Wen, among others, were toasting his recent Resort collection. And when she said every woman, Smalls wasn’t kidding: “He hasn’t given me a piece,” she said. “I think we need to talk about this.”

She may not have a dress just yet, but the man of the hour, or rather the “man of the longest day of the year,” as the evening’s host, MAC’s John Demsey, put it, had some kind words for his supermodel friend during his speech. “I grew up when all the supermodels were on the covers, and in Nepal I used to see Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, and everyone, and I was like, ‘One day I will go to New York.’ To see that happen to you, Joan”—he meant her new W magazine cover—”I was like, ‘Damn, no she didn’t.’ But behind that success is years and years of perseverance.”

Later, after the Brit singer Paloma Faith sang a pair of songs that had everyone saying, “Wait, she was amazing, what was her name again?” Gurung surprised his pal Zoe Saldana with a birthday cake. “Now that I’m later in my life, it’s about accepting what I need and not what I want,” the actress said. “What I want on my birthday is to go somewhere remote and be all melodramatic and feel bad for myself and what I need is the opposite. I need to be surrounded by the ones that I love. My family came to the apartment on my actual birthday and I started all tense and by the end, I was on the floor rolling and laughing with my grandmother, seriously.”
