The job market today is not as good as it used to be several years ago. Competition is tough in every industry and it is important to ace your job interview by answering questions correctly. How to know how to dress at an interview is also as important as giving the right answers and speaking well during a conversation with your future employer.
Aside from making sure that you wear standard business attire such as a pantsuit with hosiery and a blazer, it is also important to know if the company you are applying with has a casual or more formal approach to the way they require employees to dress. For example, if you are applying for a job at Facebook or Google, wearing a formal business suit might look out-of-place amongst workers in very casual clothing.
Match your outfit with the company’s image and social culture. If you are applying for legal jobs or for secretary jobs at prestigious firms, it would be best to wear something more formal and business-like. Whether you are supposed to come in casual, semi-formal, or formal attire, there are certain standard grooming and dressing rules that apply.
You should wear hosiery, especially if you are applying in an upscale office or a planning to work at a prestigious firm. Bring a handbag and wear clean shoes with moderate heals. Stick to footwear that is conservative yet also attractive and suitable for your outfit. Avoid wearing thigh-high boots, fishnet stockings, and high stiletto heels.
Remember that you are applying for a job and not walking the runway of a fashion show. It will be a good idea to wear conservative fashion accessories. Avoid wearing earrings or jewellery pieces that are too ostentatious. Visit the hairdressers to have your hair trimmed if necessary. Have your nails clipped to an appropriate length and apply nail polish. Take it easy on the makeup and perfume.
Acceptable clothing would be something in neutral colours or coordinated pantsuits, or a skirt and blouse and blazer. Check the business profile of the company you are applying with to see what kind of work culture they promote and then adjust your clothing to what is acceptable in their workplace.
If you are applying for work at a very casual establishment, you might have to wear something aside from a suit, blouse and blazer. Maybe khaki trousers and a sporty shirt might be more appropriate if you are applying at a sports club or sporting goods store.
It is important to be able to appear like you fit in with the establishment’s surroundings. You should also try to look like other workers milling about. Standing out at your job interview is important but not in the way you dress. Wearing the right kind of clothing on your first interview can make the best or worst impression on your interviewer. Be sure that you make a good one.
