When we heard that author and lifestyle expert Harriette Cole was debuting her new fall crochet collection during Fashion’s Night Out, we knew it was going to be good but we didn’t know it was going to be this good. The party was completely packed when we arrived but we caught a quick glimpse of the creator herself taking pictures and socializing with event attendees. Her collection, 108 Stitches HARRIETTE COLE, spanned the entire room showcasing a beautiful assortment of scarves and hats from the low hundreds to $1500. The collection ranges from eye-catching bright colors to more traditional fall and winter colors and are made out of specially picked material including Japanese linen, mohair, viscose, bamboo, rayon and wool. There was a variety of lengths and fabrics to choose from but we liked the long, soft, wool-blend scarf in deep red – especially on the bare chested male model who gave us a wink walking by.
After taking a look around at the displays, Harriette (finally getting free from the crowd) took us in the back room for an exclusive interview. The gracious host gave the scoop about the birth of 108 Stitches HARRIETTE COLE. “When I was twelve-years-old, my mom taught me to crochet,” she said. “I began to design pieces for people in my neighborhood which was the birth of my entrepreneurial spirit.” Her designing career was put on pause when she started modeling at 13. It wasn’t until memorial day of last year when she picked her old hobby back up. During her free time she and her daughter began to crochet and give their handmade pieces as gifts for Christmas and other holidays. “I’ve crocheted everyday since that day over a year ago,” Harriette said beaming. “It turned into something special, a way of meditation.” She often refers to her Mala, a meditation necklace that consists of 108 beads. “Because crocheting is meditation to me, I decided to call my collection 108 Stitches HARRIETTE COLE because the pieces started out 108 stitches wide and then made with different hooks to help them vary in size,” she said. The majority of her line is created by Harriette herself with love and care. The crochet collection is made in America and is dubbed ‘affordable luxe’.“Usually when you think of crochet, you think of older women, but my line puts of modern twist using fibers that are special and hand made so no one creation is the same. They’re truly one-of-a-kind.” But the most important thing for Harriet is helping people to do and look their best. She’s sincerely grateful for all the opportunities she’s been given and hopes to inspire others by using her pieces to make others feel great.
And as for the future? “108 Stitches HARRIETTE COLE COLLECTION is very much a reflection and culmination of my life’s work to-date. Through 108 Stitches, I am also documenting people’s stories of how they are manifesting their greatness. How? Well, there’s a book on the way. Stay tuned,” she told the Huffington Post. From an assistant Editor at Essence to serving as a lifestyle expert on the TODAY Show, Harriette Cole is harnessing over 20 years of fashion experience into all 108 Stitches. We’re excited about the collection, and are looking forward to it’s destine for great success.
