The luge-like momentum of London Collections: Men carried all the way through Sunday night’s closing dinner at the Bulgari Hotel, co-hosted by GQ‘s Dylan Jones, BFC chairman Harold Tillman, and Calvin Klein’s Italo Zucchelli. The three-day event created a kind of halo effect. Even the normally laconic Jones seemed a little giddy, blissfully happy, like everyone else, to be a part of the industry of human happiness. Zucchelli, just off a plane and infected by the buzz, was already mulling over more creative ways he could get involved next time.
“Next time” is the elephant in the room, the Fall show schedule being so ruthlessly tight that it allows less room to move, but last night was a moment to celebrate the success of this time. And, as far as being squeezed by schedules goes, Rake’s Clive Darby had some encouraging words. His Italian manufacturer was sufficiently impressed by the sound of a fashion “week” for British menswear that he’d accommodated Rake’s urgent sampling needs. A small miracle—and pleasant surprise.
Our own pleasant surprise was sharing a table with Tom Cullen, breakout star of last year’s indie sleeper Weekend. He was singing the praises of Jordan, which stands in for the Red Planet in Cullen’s new film Last Days on Mars. Playing parts foreign in parts foreign is the kind of thing that makes acting look like an ideal career opportunity—from the outside at least—so it was funny to hear Cullen expressing the same opinion about a career in fashion. And maybe it has looked like the place to be over the past few days, especially if you had an on-set call at 5 a.m. this morning, as Cullen did.
Early call times didn’t prevent an actorly crowd from supporting Burberry. Usually, designer Christopher Bailey blasts rock tunes (by the likes of Keane and One Night Only) in his studio while he’s prepping for the Milan men’s collections. But last night, he got his music fix at the brand’s store on Brompton Road, where he co-hosted a party with Eddie Redmayne that included a live show by British crooner Miles Kane.
“They care so passionately about their craft, but also about their image,” the designer said of 26-year-old Kane and his peers in the country’s music scene, many of whom Burberry has partnered with for ad campaigns and concerts. Lending the brand some extra music cred? Sir Elton John, who swung by on the early side. “I’ll definitely put that in the old diary: ‘Elton John attended my party,’ ” Redmayne said.
But for Downton Abbey fans, at least, the party’s high note was the spectacle of Dan Stevens (a.k.a. the show’s Matthew Crawley) coolly circling the soirée by himself. Declared one observer who’d been making the LC:M rounds: “Best sighting of the week.”
