Many noticed (myself included) a certain non-trend trend appearing on the catwalks for Spring/Summer 2012. What is a non-trend trend? I’m not sure, I just made it up… but I feel like it best describes what I am about to address. Which is: a complete and total lack of mascara.
What?!? That’s crazy talk, you say? Yes, I know. I am among the women who can solemnly swear to have never left the house without mascara for the last 15 years. Needless to say, the idea of a no-mascara trend makes me *quite* uncomfortable. But here’s the thing: looking at backstage beauty photos, it’s hard to deny that the no-mascara look is surprisingly pretty and fresh.
Donna Karan, Alexander McQueen, Calvin Klein, Burberry Prorsum and Preen are just a few of the big names whose makeup artists decided to ditch the mascara in light of a more fresh, natural and nude look. Even Lady Gaga herself appeared on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar completely sans mascara, and seriously who are we to question the Gaga.
Does all of this mean you should chuck your tubes of mascara and start preaching from the naked lash bible? No, nobody likes a trend whore… but giving your lashes some breathing time in lieu of slathering on the black is not all together a bad idea.
Think spring, think fresh, think young. This is a trend to try with a great pair of jeans or cute sundress, not a couture gown. On the same note, try your first day sans mascara after a weekend in the sun when you’re feeling great, not after 3 days with a stomach flu.
Can’t stand the thought of walking out the door with naked, vulnerable lashes? Rock an adaptation of this trend by swiping clear mascara (also known as brow gel) over your top and bottom lashes for a natural but slightly-more-defined look.
