The one-eyed look that could last forever

The one-eyed look that could last forever

It’s a typical ’emo’ look – long locks of hair which defy normal fringe length by plunging over one eye and – in extreme cases – down to the chin.

But dedicated followers of emo fashion may be doing long-term damage to their eyesight.

An Australian eyesight expert says teenagers who wear long fringes swept over one eye may suffer from amblyopia – the medical term for lazy eye – later on in life.

Optometrists Association national executive member Andrew Hogan told Australia’s Daily Telegraph said the hair acts as an eye patch, limiting the eye’s sensory stimulation, meaning the eye will see poorly compared to the other.

“If a young emo chap has a fringe covering one eye all the time, that eye won’t see a lot of detail,” Mr Hogan said.

“And if it happens from a young age, that eye can become amblyotic .”
