Understanding Acrylic Nails – Better than Gel?

Acrylic nails have been around for decades and for good reason: they not only lengthen and harden nails for long periods of time but also create the perfect canvas for amazing nail art.

What exactly are acrylic nails?

Acrylic nails are a combination of powder and liquid monomers and polymers that form a putty-like substance then shaped onto your nail with a brush then dried.

The ingredients of acrylic nails have basically remained the same historically, with only minor improvements in texture and drying time.

Two types of acrylic nails

Acrylic nails are either made with a plastic tip (where the acrylic is glued onto your nail then sanded down so it looks like an extension of your natural nail) or with a form (a removal sticker that’s wrapped around the nail and serves as a shaping guide).

What’s the difference between acrylic nails and gel nails?

Excellent question! Acrylic nails are much stronger and harder than gel nails. They also tend to last longer. That doesn’t mean gel nails don’t have their benefits. Gel nails are good for those who want a more flexible, natural nail.

“If you want really long, pointy nails or 3D nail artwork, acrylic nails are a better choice than gel nails.”

How long does it take to get acrylic nails done in your Montreal salon?

Many think acrylic nails take a long time to complete. Not necessarily true. A good nail technician can complete the process in a half hour. Though of course, polish designs and nail art will take longer. It’s best to allow 1 hour for the process roughly.

How long do acrylic nails last?

A complete set of acrylic fake nails can last anywhere from 6 – 8 weeks, depending on the type of nail and lifestyle. You do need to stop in and see your nail technician every 2-3 weeks to fill in the space created by your natural nail growing in.

Don’t forget your fill-in appointments! This important steps takes the pressure off of your natural nail and keeps fungal infections at bay.
